Module 2: Life in the Sea

September 2, 2014 PowerPoint  Honors Marine Biology Class 3 Module 2 Part 1

Congratulations to Esther for winning the class challenge for her photo of her cat.  Thank you to all who participated!!

In class we performed 3 experiments.  The first one was Experiment 2.1:  Photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which an organism uses the energy from the sun to produce its own food. Light is absorbed by special pigments within the organism, the most common is chlorophyll. (bright green).  When chlorophyll captures solar energy, a series of chemical reactions using carbon dioxide and water follows, and they result in the creation of simple sugars and oxygen.  In photosynthesis, plants can take energy from the light of the sun (in our experiment, from the lamp) and use it to make food for themselves. One product of this process is oxygen gas. We observed Oxygen being produced as a result of photosynthesis.

In Experiment 2.2:  Respiration, we observed how a goldfish responds through their respiration (counting their gill movements) when salt water is added.  Surprisingly, we concluded that different goldfish respond differently (some goldfish’s respiration went up while others went down) when salt water is added.

In Experiment 2.3:  Osmosis we observed potatoes that were submerged in fresh water and also in salt water.  The potato in fresh water became hard and ridged and we concluded that potato cells were inflated by absorbing the water. The potato in salt water became soft and mushy. We concluded that the potato cells became dehydrated.

Those students wanting to attend the Operas this year.  Reserve your seat with me by September 10.

Our first Wet lab will be held on September 30.  I will need parent volunteers to drive.  Watch for my email with all of the details.
